EXCITE, EXPLORE, EVALUATE
September 8, 2022
Greetings, DKG Provincial Presidents and Chapter Presidents,
As the newly elected Area Representative of Canada (ARC), I return from the International Leadership Orientation Meeting (ILOM) for the Administrative Board brimming with information and enthusiasm.
First, I wish to welcome you to the team. I hope to get to know you personally over the next year, both on zoom and in person. I know you have much to share about your province and DKG. And second, thank you Marjorie Sinclair and Betty Rose, former Area Reps for Canada, for all your help.
In mid-July I met some of you in New Orleans for a wonderful convention of approximately DKG 900 members. It was action-packed, starting on the first evening when we were marched around several blocks of NOLA following an exciting jazz band who stirred up a crowd as we went. We heard inspiring speakers and watched the installation of the new administrative board. How impressed I am with all of them. Debbie LeBlanc, our new International President, and Nita Scott, the Executive Director, are warm, extremely knowledgeable, efficient, and welcoming. So are the other staff, Phyllis Hickey, Trisha Woodley, Peggy Jonas, Victor (high tech!) Trisnadi, Taylor Osborn and Sarah Sanchez, whom we met at the ILOM for three days in Austin in August.
- Debbie LeBlanc’s motto for the biennium is Vitality, Relevance and Sustainability. We are leading women educators impacting education worldwide. Our founders were mavericks! Out of a group of 12 women came a society of 55,000.
- I hope our chapters will address each of these Canadian topics I’ve chosen for the next biennium
- Indigenous relations
- Climate change
- Populism—what it’s all about
- Sept 15. Deadline for submissions to be an international speaker and to submit art to the DKG Art Gallery
- Please put the DKG logo on all communications. You can download a variety from the web. The only stipulation is that you don’t change the proportion.
- International is switching to Basecamp 3 for communications and has put all the provincial presidents on it. There is a training tutorial which I can send you.
- Also, the DKG web will soon be reimagined, with the theme “User Friendly and User Focused.” It will be divided into a few sections that will lead more quickly to the information we need.
- Already, we must start thinking of who we would like for the next ARC. Deadline for submissions: Feb. 15, 2023.
- Congratulations to former ARC Betty Rose: changes to the constitution will allow for the nomination of Beverly McLaughlin as an honorary member.
The DKG Focus:
- Meaningful, relevant membership for ALL
- Diversity in leadership and membership
- Professional support for others
- If you have a floundering chapter, your province may request help from the revitalization team in Austin, its purpose to listen and guide. A member will visit at a provincial president’s request.
- Consider having hybrid meetings: Members can attend in person or on zoom.
- Invite members from chapters that have folded to join your chapter in person or on zoom.
- Have each member think of 3 people in some field of education, formal or not. Invite them to join.
- Chapters can carry over money from one year to the next. You don’t need to spend it all each year.
- If you are using pictures from the web, even the DKG web, make sure you have copyright or permission.
- Please SEND copies of your provincial minutes.
- Also SEND the names and email addresses of your chapter presidents.
- Our first provincial zoom meeting: Wednesday, Oct 19, Central Time: 8:00. Is this time okay?
- Create Smart Goals for your province and chapter.
- Specific
- Measurable
- Achievable
- Relevant
- Time-bound
Michigan, Detroit: July 11-16, 2023; Arizona, Phoenix: July 18-22, 2023; Finland, Tampere, July 26-29
Best regards from your Area Representative Canada (ARC)
