Canadian Forum
June 11, 2022
If you missed the Canadian Forum on Saturday June 11, here are some highlights.
On Saturday June 11, 2022 at 10:00 (Pacific Time), 64 participants from across Canada attended the Canadian Forum. Although it has traditionally been held during the International Convention and Conferences, this year, it happened earlier. So, on Saturday morning, 11 BC Women Educators logged onto the Zoom meeting: Lennor and Heather from SVI, Donna-Faye, Anne, Frances, Helen, Donna, Meredyth, and Norma from Vancouver; and Karin B. and Phyllis from Fraser Shores.
Presiding over the meeting were Marjorie Sinclair and Quebec President Dianea Carrol Phillips.
After the “Gathering Greeting” from Elder Jean Bartibogue, and Acknowledgement to the Land by Marjorie, we sang our National Anthem, while a series of Canadian photos flashed on our screen.

International President Becky Sadowski reviewed the process of the sale of the old building in Austin Texas, and the careful scrutiny of the potential buyers. Since the sale, the building has been torn down. A new highrise tower providing housing as well as retail space will be built. There will also be a space on the property to commemorate the history of DKG and it’s work throughout the world. She also mentioned that she meets with newly joined members once a month, by invitation!
Betty Rose (past ARC) reviewed the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution regarding changes for honourary membership. In the past, Chief Justice Beverly Mclaughlin had been nominated, but was ineligible because she had taught. And, honourary members are not to have been educators, just women who are passionate! (It means that, as a “teacher”, a woman can join as an active member.) So, this motion will be presented in New Orleans, and we sure hope that it passes! To see the motion, check out page 42 of the DKG News, March-April.
Each of the Provincial Presidents gave a brief report of their activities, and Marjorie gave her report as the Canadian Forum Chair from 2020 to 2022.
The president of the Quebec State reviewed the past 4 years of the Canadian project, ArtsCan, in a slide show. The treasurer of the project also presented a final report for the Canadian Project, explaining that over $15,000 had been raised to support this project. Two nominations for the next Canadian project were presented under New Business later in the meeting.

- Art for Aid/Sew & Sew – by Ontario. Art For Aid supports First Nations, Inuit and Metis art and cultural education programs through access to quality art supplies and program supplies. For the “Sewing” part, students in the program are provided with sewing materials and sewing machines to pursue their artistry.
- Haiti Forward School Construction was also presented by an Ontario member. It would provide funds for Haiti, in particular, food, rebuilding, health, educational and sports programs. The immediate goal was to complete a new school.
Also under New Business was the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution to change the name of DKG to “Women Educators Society International (DKG)”. This motion can also be found on pages 84 and 85 in the DKG News March-April.
Donna-Faye spoke passionately about the “history” of this proposal – and its aim to make our International Society more open in what it really is and what it really means! Two members who will actually be in New Orleans have offered to speak on our behalf, since no-one from BC plans to attend this International Convention.

The final major activity in the meeting, as it was running well overtime, was Joan Wolfe’s motion to nominate Beverley McLachlin as an International Honourary member, if the first Amendment to change the requirement for honourary membership passes.
This motion was passed.
After a long session, and omitting the small group discussions, we signed off by 1:40PM. It was, once again, a wonderful opportunity to meet with our sister Women Educators in Canada and admire their dedication.
